The Righetti Community Park has quite a history before it has been completed. Without going into detail, the City of San Luis Obispo accepted the land and development funds years ago for the park to be located inside the new Righetti housing development. The park is to be built on approximately 11 acres and its design went through an extensive development process. The final design included play fields large enough for an adult soccer pitch and a smaller children’s pitch, a children’s play area, 8 pickleball courts, 2 tennis courts, a full basketball court, a bocce court, picknic areas and a pump bicycle track.

However, when the cost of the overall design was estimated, it was determined that the cost would be almost 5 times the collected developer fees and 3 times the city estimates. That lead to a reconsideration of the design as the city did not have funding for that amount. Recognizing that the constituents (various recreation sports participants, local residents, etc. ) were unhappy that the promised park was still not a reality, the city went to bid for each of the above parts of the park individually and in total. Their plan was to build the number of options that would fit their budget. Finally, at the end of 2025 the City Council approved the plan to build the combination of 1) the base option (fields, children’s area, bathrooms, parking lot ), 2) option #1 (eight pickleball courts ) and 3) option #3 (bicycle pump track ).

Groundbreaking for the park was in the Spring of 2026 and completion is scheduled for the Fall of 2027. The additional sections of the park will be completed at a future time depending upon budgets for subsequent years.
